This weeks lecture asks us to consider the ethics of design, it talks about the inclusiveness of the disabled community, being aware of racial discrimination, offending people through gender and sexuality depictions and other sensitive subjects that need to be considered. It also outlines the differences in preferences between males and females when choosing and working jobs.

It seems to me as though political correctness is another factor impeding creative freedom and is, in a way, an indirect form of censorship. There is no doubt these things should be considered in design and there are boundaries and limitations of what is acceptable that need to be acknowledged. In saying this though, the whole dynamic behind the equality movement has become quite hostile and it seems people are ready to attack even the smallest indiscretions with labels like racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc..

I enjoyed the Webstock video, the points raised were very relevant and true. I like the idea that we as designers are responsible for the way our designer influence people and world. This statement reminds me of legendary graphic designer Tibor Kalman, whom I wrote my essay on in CIU110 last trimester. Tibor also talked about "good design" and how designers should be ethically conscious when accepting clients and projects.
"Design is just language and the real issue is what you use that language to do"
- Tibor Kalman
I think the values expressed in the Webstock video and by Tibor Kalman are a very important part of being a good designer. I have definitely learnt from these influences during my studies and will carry those lessons with me when I begin my design career in the future.
This is the video included from the lecture:
